Hotel De La Ville: A 5

Views of the Roman skyline from Hotel de la Ville's rooftop

From St. Peter's Basilica to the Vittoriano, the Pantheon to the Colosseum, Rome boasts one of the most iconic and romantic skylines in the world. So when choosing where to stay in the Eternal City, it’s ideal to find a hotel that gives you a bird’s eye view of the grand cityscape.

And when it comes to panoramic views of Rome’s famous domes and monuments, it simply doesn’t get better than the Hotel de la Ville. Part of Rocco Forte Hotels’ ultra-luxurious portfolio, the hotel’s glamorous Cielo rooftop bar and restaurant gives guests jaw-dropping 360-degree views of the Roman skyline that they can enjoy with a top-notch cocktail in hand.

Along with impeccable five-star service, sumptuous guest rooms and suites, a tranquil inner courtyard that makes you feel far aways from the traffic and crowds, and an enviable location just above the Spanish steps, it’s what makes this historic palazzo one of the best hotels in The Eternal City.

The Vibe

Timeless elegance

History

The property dates back to the 18th century, when it became a favorite of European nobles during the Grand Tour (a period of roughly 300 years when aristocrats from throughout Europe came to Rome to study its art and culture). It was officially classified as a hotel in the 1920’s, and was expanded in the mid-twentieth century. Hotel de la Ville became part of the Rocco Forte Hotels collection in 2019 after an extensive remodel.

Architecture and Decór

The Grand Tour was the inspiration for the entire property, which has a sophisticated, curated feel throughout. Luxurious Italian fabrics, classic Roman artworks, handmade Rubelli and Dedar wallpapers, and vintage tapestries by Zardi & Zardi lend a timeless, stylish feel.

Accommodations

There are 104 well-appointed rooms: 89 rooms and 15 ultra-luxe suites. All are opulently decorated with plush velvet upholstered furniture, oversized mirrors, and headboards and benches with nailhead trim. Grand Tour-inspired objet such a obelisks and bookcases with curated collections of books, statues, and artful ephemera adorn the rooms.

While the bedrooms feel plush and layered, the bathrooms are light, bright, modern, and clean, with gorgeous white marble vanities and walls, patterned tile, and intoxicatingly delicious-smelling Irene Forte toiletries.

Rooms boast beautiful views of Rome, the super-chic inner courtyard with its cheerful white-and-orange striped umbrellas, or of Villa Borghese park.

Penthouse Suite

If you really want to splash out, book the penthouse suite, which boasts opulent living areas, massive bathrooms, a sleek and modern kitchen, and incredible terraces with potted citrus trees and jaw-dropping panoramic views.

Dining

Mosaico’s lovely dining room and gorgeous courtyard are open for breakfast and brunch. In the morning, there’s an extensive buffet and sweet and savory dishes made-to-order. In the evening, the restaurant serves up bistro-style fare from its wood-fired ovens. Da Sistina (named for Via Sistina, the street it sits on) is an elegant and modern take on the classic Roman trattoria.

Cielo bar & restaurant

The hotel also has two tony bars, and you won’t want to miss the chance to sip the top-notch cocktails at either. At the Julep Herbal & Vermouth Bar, well-dressed mixologists shake up drinks made with botanical spirits.

But Cielo is the Hotel de la Ville’s prized jewel. Not only is it one of the most glamorous rooftop bars to sip creative cocktails in all of Rome, but it’s also one of the best places to take in the Eternal City’s romantic dome-studded skyline. Reservations are coveted, but hotel guests can take advantage of priority access. The 360-degree panorama is breathtaking at any time of day, but especially at sunset when the entire city turns rose gold.
